AI Summary
A processor that has pulse width modulation generation circuitry that provides an improved ability to deal with the less than perfect switching characteristics of external switch- ing devices that are connected to PWM hardware included in a processor. Complementary PWM output signals have dual deadtime delay in which the delay between the inacti- vation of the first signal and the activation of the second signal may be different than the delay between the inacti- vation of the second signal and the activation of the first signal. This provides an improved capability to deal with non-symmetric switching characteristics of the external switching devices, and the circuitry to which they are connected. The dual deadtime pulse width modulation gen- erator for a processor includes deadtime generation circuitry operable to generate a first pulse width modulated signal and a second pulse width modulated signal complementary to the first pulse width modulated signal, wherein there is a first delay between inactivation of the first pulse width modu- lated signal and activation of the second pulse width modu- lated signal, a second delay between inactivation of the second pulse width modulated signal and activation of the first pulse width modulated signal, and the first and second delays are not equal. The first delay and the second delay may be independently settable. 16 Claims, 6 Drawing Sheets

An improved vehicle odometer is provided with an encoder and a microcontroller. The encoder has a unique key that configures an encryption algorithm. The encryption algo- rithm can be in the form of circuitry or software or any combination there between. The encoder receives a incre- ment signal from the vehicle indicating that the vehicle has traveled a pre-determined distance. The encoder then incre- ments the odometer-related value and then encrypts it with the encryption algorithm. The encoder then wraps the encrypted odometer-related value into a data packet with a serial number. Only a suitably equipped computing device, such as a microcontroller, identify and correctly decrypt and process the encrypted odometer-related value, thereby pre- venting the tampering of the vehicle’s odometer. 11 Claims, 9 Drawing Sheets dentify Device by 314 erial Number or by a Function of the Serial Number Discard Data and Publish Error Message Decrypt Encrypted dometer Value and ‘ransmit to Display Device

AI Summary
A device including a microcontroller fabricated on a semi- conductor chip is used to control an LCD display of an external system intended to be controlled by the microcon- troller. The microcontroller enters a sleep state in which it operates in a battery power conservation mode during peri- ods of time when functional activity of the microcontroller is reduced. The microcontroller awakens from the sleep state for resumption of activity when such a period ends. Timing to the LCD is decoupled from the microcontroller’s own internal clock when the independent internal on-chip clock, which may be an RC oscillator, is selected by the user of the device. This allows the chip to continue to drive the LCD display even though the microcontroller’s internal clock has stopped during the sleep. 6 Claims, 11 Drawing Sheets ILTAGES 13 DIGITAL TESTER

AI Summary
An electronic system, comprising a digital processor and an EEPROM, has circuit logic and program software or firm- ware for determining if a programming voltage level is sufficient for reliably programming the EEPROM. A charge pump is enabled and generates a voltage used for program- ming of the EEPROM. The enabled charge pump thereby loads a battery power supply. In addition, a test load may be connected to the output of the charge pump to simulate the EEPROM load during a programming operation to the EEPROM. The charge pump output voltage is measured to determine if at least a desired voltage value is obtained. Once the charge pump voltage level has been pre-qualified for the desired voltage value, an actual programming opera- tion to the EEPROM may be performed. If the voltage level does not reach the desired value then a programming opera- tion is inhibited and the electronic system may alarm or shut down operation. The charge pump voltage level is a good indication and measure of battery charge condition under actual EEPROM programming load conditions.

AI Summary
A system for reading a memory cell of a memory array at voltage levels lower than an erased threshold voltage of the memory array. The system uses a voltage regulator which is coupled to the memory array for charging a desired row of the memory array to a supply voltage. The voltage regulator is further used for clamping the desired row at a voltage level which is no higher than a maximum programmed threshold voltage of the memory array. The voltage regulator is able to perform these functions while consuming no DC current. A voltage booster is coupled to the voltage regulator and to the memory array. The voltage booster is used for raising the voltage level of the desired row to a voltage above the maximum erased threshold voltage of the memory cell. This allows the memory cell to be read at voltage levels which are lower than the threshold voltage of the memory array.

The outputs of the two independent current generators are combined to provide an approxi- mately linear capacitor charging current which is directly proportional to changes in temperature. The capacitor charg- ing current is used to drive the oscillation generator which outputs a clock frequency that is approximately linearly dependent on temperature with determinable slope and intercept. The frequency counter compares the output of the oscillation generator with the independent reference oscil- lator to compute a digital value for temperature. The preci- sion temperature sensor is implemented on a single, mono- lithic integrated circuit.

A semiconductor device for receiving analog input signals includes a microprocessor for processing signal information. The microprocessor is put in a sleep mode when not called upon to process signal information, and is either left in that mode or awakened depending on the level of a continuously variable analog input signal relative to a programmed threshold level. If the relative levels of the analog input signal and the programmed threshold level result in the microprocessor being awakened, information contained in the analog input signal is processed to initiate a selected action. In typical applications, the semiconductor device performs a control function, such as to control the operation of an external circuit in response to information from at least one continuously variable analog input signal derived from the external circuit. The microprocessor, when awakened, assists in controlling the external circuit to restore that analog input signal to a predetermined level distinct from the threshold level. In some applications, such as for battery charging and monitoring, the device is responsive to a plurality of different continuously variable analog input signals derived from the external circuit and indicative of a specified circuit function thereof, These signals are applied to the device in interleaved sequence according to a priority that depends on their respective rates of variation. AI Summary
A phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit has a phase comparator for comparing the phases of a local clock frequency and a reference frequency to generate a control signal indicative of a direction of adjustment of the local clock frequency for reducing the phase difference between the two frequencies. A voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) of the PLL responds to application of a control voltage thereto to generate an oscillation signal frequency from which the local clock frequency is derived. A loop filter responds to the control signal from the phase comparator to develop a control voltage for application to the VCO to adjust the local clock frequency in the direction indicated by the control signal to reduce the relative phase difference. The loop filter has a start-up cil reference frequency after a predetermined number of cycles following commencement of operation or reset of the PLL circuit as being indicative of stabilization of the reference frequency, and is responsive to detection of such selected edge for promptly producing a linear boost of the control voltage from an initial level of substantially zero volts to a predetermined pull-up level exceeding the level of control voltage required to achieve phase locking. This reduces the time interval required to achieve phase locking, measured from the selected cycle edge. The loop filter is also respon- sive to the control voltage reaching the pull-up level to incrementally reduce the control voltage to the level required to achieve phase locking.

A method is disclosed for testing a high speed microcon- troller fabricated on a semiconductor chip, and for testing relatively low speed functions of a liquid crystal display (LCD) module on the chip that drives an off-chip LCD for an external system to be controlled by the microcontroller with a plurality of discrete analog voltage levels for per- forming the LCD functions. Digital values are multiplexed in time slots of a test waveform to simulate in high speed digital format of a test mode the low speed timing, relative magnitude and functionality of analog voltage levels used to drive the LCD; A high speed driver is selectively coupled to a pin of the chip, to which the discrete analog voltage levels are normally applied at low speed to drive the LCD, and the test waveform is applied to the high speed driver. The digital values and timing that appear on the pin are then monitored as an indication of proper functionality of the LCD module. The high speed driver is switched out and the normal low speed LCD driver is switched back for return to an LCD user mode when the test mode is completed. Monitoring the pin with a digital tester allows verification that pin pulses in predetermined time slots indicate the corresponding analog voltage level is being applied at the proper time during normal operation of the LCD module, and digitally testing of continuity in an analog channel. A transistor normally employed on the chip for electrostatic discharge protection is activated to selectively couple the high speed driver to the pin for the high speed testing mode.

AI Summary
Apparatus for providing multiple of discrete voltage levels to drive a liquid crystal display (LCD) from an LCD module on board a microcontroller chip includes a charge pump with a switched-capacitor that develops the discrete voltages as multiples of the value of a base voltage that remains sub- stantially without change irrespective of change in the supply voltage. A switched-capacitor charging circuit selec- tively charges a capacitor to produce successive additive charges individually retrievable from the capacitor. An LCD drive selectively transmits the discrete voltage levels to activate the LCD according to status of an external system under the control of the microcontroller. Voltage losses that may occur during the switched-capacitor charging are com- pensated to maintain the levels of the discrete voltages free of decay. Compensation is achieved by overcharging the capacitor by an amount substantially equivalent to the amount of voltage loss on the capacitor, using active feed- back obtained from monitoring the charge on the capacitor.

AI Summary
A method of high speed reading of data from an EPROM, in which a memory array is programmed based on device status at intersections of rows and columns of the array to store data therein as 0’s and 1’s, uses a capacitive over- charging and discharging technique to enable fast voltage stabilization without drawing significant current. A row containing the memory element to be read is quickly over- driven to overcharge an effective capacitance associated with the row to substantially the maximum level of the EPROM supply voltage which may exceed the programmed threshold voltage of the selected memory element. The effective capacitance is thereupon discharged to a predeter- mined voltage level below both the maximum level of the supply voltage and the programmed threshold. Then the status and data content of the selected memory element are read by first grounding an electrode of a source-drain path of a transistor comprising the memory element to cause current with substantially no DC component to flow through that path of the transistor. A sense amplifier in the source-drain path of the transistor is triggered to detect current flow therethrough as indicative of the data content of the memory element.

AI Summary
A microcontroller chip with a central processing unit (CPU) is adapted to control an external system with which the device is to be installed in circuit. The microcontroller chip includes an on-chip peripheral universal timing function module with a register for storing a value selected to signify a distinctive event in a waveform. A timer generates a series of values as a function of time as a measure of the value selected to signify the distinctive event. The register and the limer are coupled to a pin of the microcontroller chip on which said waveform is to be applicd. Equality between the values in the timer and the register signify the distinctive event as one of a capture and a compare of an event in the waveform, to generate an interrupt to the CPU. The register is selectively split into separate master and slave registers for automatic synchronization of the transfer of a value entered into the master register to the slave register with a repetitive boundary of the waveform, to provide selective pulse width modulation of the waveform.

AI Summary
A microcontroller fabricated on a semiconductor chip is adapted, when operating, to execute programs and instruc- tions and, in response, to generate control signals to selec- tively control external apparatus. A clock generates timing signals to control the timing of the microcontroller execution and operation. An on-chip program memory has space avilable for storing a program to be executed by the micro- controller in sequential steps in successive address locations of the program memory. An instruction stored in unerasable memory on the chip initiates self-programming of the pro- gram memory with the program to be executed by the microcontroller by enabling a pointer timed by the clock to alternately read addresses containing steps of the program to be executed from off-chip memories and to write same into successive addresses of the on-chip program memory by incrementing the latter addresses with each step to be written therein.

AI Summary
A seria! EEPROM (eicctrically erasable programmable read only memory) device and method for reducing the time required to load data into the serial EEPROM device using a special write cache are disclosed. The EEPROM has an internal memory array for receiving a burst of data sent by a microcontroller, Data in the burst of data is initially loaded into an SRAM (static random access memory) write cache where it is stored sequentially and grouped in a plurality of pages, so that the bus and the microcontroller are freed to allow the microcontroller to perform other processing tasks at least until the EEPROM memory is written and the EEPROM is again accessible to the microcontroller, Writing of the internal memory array is accomplished sequentially with data from the pages of the cache loaded into rows of the internal memory array until the cache is depleted, the pages being sized so that an integral number of pages is stored in each row of the internal memory array.

AI Summary
A microcontroller and associated EPROM program memory are fabricated in a single semiconductor chip. The micro- controller device is adapted to be programmed using digital command words or other bit patterns applied as inputs after installation of the device in circuit with a system to be controlled by the device, and to have its programming pins isolated from the system to avoid effects on system operation while the programming is taking place. The in-circuit pro- gramming uses considerably less than the total number of input/output (I/O) pins of the device, which in total are fewer than the number of bits in a command word. This is achieved with a serial/parallel programming interface between the pins and the program memory, and by applying the data in serial fashion to the interface where it is latched and loaded in parallel. in the memory. Input data to the device may alternatively be entered in parallel to the interface in bytes of width less than the total number of I/O pins of the device.

AI Summary
A microcontroller is adapted, when operating, to execute programs and instructions and, in response, to generate control signals to selectively control external apparatus. The microcontroller includes a power supply for supplying power to the overall device within a predetermined range suitable for its operation, and a clock for supplying a clock frequency to the microcontroller with a stability suitable for precise timing and counting within the device. The micro- controller is selectively reset to prevent it from executing programs and instructions for purposes of generating the control signals, and is maintained in the reset condition despite initiation of a removal from the reset condition, until the power supplied by the power supply is in a predeter- mined range and the clock frequency supplied by the clock is stable. In this way, no execution by the microcontroller is permitted until device stability is achieved, to prevent errors in execution. In the disclosed embodiment, the reset condi- tion is maintained by a power-up timer and an oscillator start-up timer, each timer having a programmable timeout interval to end the reset condition only when the timeout intervals of both timers have expired.

AI Summary
A semiconductor microcontroller includes the capabil- ity to perform analog to digital conversions of an analog signal representative of a variable parameter indicative of the need to exercise a control function. While the analog to digital conversions are being performed, the microcontroller processor can be powered down to eliminate noise arising from switching activities of the processor as a source of inaccuracy in the conversion process. At the end of the conversion, the analog to digital converter can either shut itself down or wake up the processor. The powering down is achieved by sim- ply disabling the clock input to the microcontroller so that the processor is still activated but incapable of undergoing switching functions.

AI Summary
Power consumption of a serial EEPROM is reduced while simultaneously precluding data corruption during write operations. These results are achieved by operat- ing a brownout detector in the device to sense EE- PROM supply voltage below a predetermined level and thereupon to place the EEPROM in a reduced power mode, but only during an interval that a write sequence is taking place. Such an interval includes loading of data in a temporary storage cache and writing the loaded data into the EEPROM. At the same time that the low voltage level is detected during a write sequence, any load or write operation then in progress is aborted. The brownout detector is intentionally left disabled or in a sleep mode during any read mode or standby mode since there is no jeopardy of corrupting the EEPROM memory during those times.

AI Summary
An erasable programmable memory device has a num- ber of data storage blocks. Each block has an endurance characteristic that at least roughly defines the number of times data may be erased from and written to the block before it wears out in that data cannot then be further erased from and written to the block. A redun- dant data storage block of memory capacity and endur- ance similar to that of each of the other data storage blocks is disposed in parallel with a selected one of the latter for which higher endurance is desired. This ena- bles identical data to be written simultaneously to the two blocks and thus considerably increases the endur- ance of the selected block by virtue of the fact that identical memory cells in both blocks must fail before the endurance of the selected block will be depleted. After the selected block has been designated for high endurance and placed in parallel with the redundant block, a fuse may be set to prevent alteration of that designation.

AI Summary
An erasable programmable memory device has a num- ber of contiguous data storage cells forming the data memory of the device. The address of one of these data storage cells is stored to designate it as a cell which is to be write protected so that its contents may not thereaf- ter be erased or overwritten. Information is also stored to identify the total number of contiguous data storage cells to be similarly write protected commencing with the cell whose address is stored to designate write pro- tection. The contents of the designated and identified cells are then made permanent. Write protection of the designated and identified cells is accomplished by com- paring each write operation address with the addresses of the data storage cells encompassed within the pro- tected area, and if it is within that area, aborting the write operation.

AI Summary
A single chip, semiconductor microcontroller device is adapted to control an aspect of the operation of an external system. The device includes a CPU, program memory for storing instructions to be selectively exe- cuted by the CPU to perform the control functions, and peripheral EEPROM data memory adapted to be writ- ten to for storing selected data in selected ones of a multiplicity of addresses of the data memory and for selective retrieval of the stored dam by the CPU within its control function. Internal logic in the device is imple- mented to abort a write operation in progress on the EEPROM data memory upon occurrence of an asyn- chronous reset of the device. An error flag is set by the logic to indicate that the write operation is being aborted, and the data that was partially written to the EEPROM memory at the time the write operation was aborted is held intact.

AI Summary
The usability of an electrically erasable programmable semiconductor memory device is assured after shipment from the factory despite implementing the device with a user option to selectively configure the security, en- durance, organization, density or protocol of the mem- ory array of the device. The user selected configuration is made permanent and inaccessible for change by pro- gramming associated normally reversible configuration fuses which are rendered incapable of being repro- grammed (reversed) thereafter by the automatic and simultaneous programming of a lockout fuse. Final testing of the device at the factory is permitted by an override of the lockout fuse during testing of the opera- tion of the configuration fuses, and, when the testing is completed, returning, under program control, all fuses to a default condition in which the configuration fuses are limited to one-time programmability as a conse- quence of automatic simultaneous programming of the lockout fuse and configuration fuses at any time after shipment of the device from the factory.

AI Summary
The RAM includes sub-arrays having odd and even memory locations, respectively. A data move instruc- tion results in externally generated row and column address signals which are decoded to cause a first mem- ory location, in one of the sub-arrays, to be selected and data to be read. The next memory location in sequence, in the other of the sub-arrays, is then selected, without necessity for an additional set of row address signals, for writing of the read information. The row decoder in- cludes row indexing circuitry actuatable upon receipt of a shift signal signifying that the first memory location is in the last column of a given row. When the shift signal is received, the write location is automatically selected to be in the succeeding row.
